How to Choose a Flower Girl Dress: Every Age, Style & Budget
The Wedding Issue · From Our Miami Atelier
She walks first. Every guest turns. Here is how to choose the dress for that moment.
How do you choose a flower girl dress? Choose by four things: her age, the wedding's style and colors, comfort she'll keep on from the aisle to the last dance, and a fit made for her body rather than a size chart. The bride usually chooses the style, and the flower girl's parents traditionally buy the dress. For a luxury wedding, a custom-made flower girl dress is the only way to match the wedding exactly and fit her perfectly.
This guide covers flower girl dresses for every age from baby to 12, the most popular styles, who pays, how to measure for the right size, the best stores to buy online, and how to order a custom flower girl dress from our Miami atelier.

Chapter I
Flower Girl Dresses by Age
Flower girl dress for a baby: soft, simple and easy to change. Babies are often carried, or pulled down the aisle in a little wagon, so choose knee length with a gentle tulle skirt and a soft lining.
Flower girl dress for a toddler or 2 year old: short enough to walk in confidently. Knee or tea length, with no long train to trip on and no hoops.
Flower girl dress for a 3 or 4 year old: the classic flower girl age. A full tulle skirt, a sash or bow and ankle or floor length if she's steady on her feet.
Flower girl dress for a 7 or 8 year old: she can wear a true ball gown with a short train, a cape, lace sleeves or feathers.
Flower girl dress for a 10 or 12 year old, and teens: more elegant and less little-girl. A refined neckline and a fitted bodice, often styled as a junior bridesmaid.

What Are the Most Popular Flower Girl Dress Styles?
The classic ball gown. White or ivory tulle with a satin bodice. Timeless for church and cathedral weddings.
Feathers. The modern couture look, and the one guests photograph most.
Bohemian and floral. Lace, soft layers and flowers for garden, beach and vineyard weddings.
The mini bride. A tiny version of the bride's gown, often with a cape or veil-like train.
Color. Blush, peach, mauve and beige to match the bridesmaids' palette.
The big bow. A dramatic bow at the back, which is what guests see as she walks away down the aisle.

How to Match the Flower Girl Dress to the Wedding
Match the bride's white. Bright white, ivory and cream look very different side by side. Send us a fabric swatch or photo of the bride's gown and we'll match it.
Match the setting. Cathedral and ballroom weddings call for a ball gown and train; gardens and beaches for lace, florals and shorter lengths.
Match the season. Long sleeves, a capelet or velvet for winter and Christmas weddings; light tulle for summer.
Match one detail. The bride's lace, her flowers or the wedding color in a sash ties her into every photo.
Chapter IV
A Dress She'll Keep On From the Aisle to the Last Dance
A wedding day is long: photos, the ceremony, the reception and dancing. A scratchy dress comes off before the cake. Ours have a silk-touch no-itch lining against her skin, with no glue, wires or rigid hoops, and they are cut to her measurements, so nothing pinches when she sits, kneels for photos or dances. If she's comfortable, she'll smile in every picture.
Chapter V
Who Buys the Flower Girl Dress?
Traditionally, the flower girl's parents buy the dress, and the bride chooses the style and color so it fits the wedding. Many brides now choose to give the dress as a thank-you gift, especially when it's custom made. Either way, decide early: whoever orders will need her measurements, and the bride will want to approve the design. We're happy to send the sketch to both.
Chapter VI
How to Measure for a Flower Girl Dress Size
Children grow fast, so measure her within a few weeks of ordering, and tell us her age on the wedding day. For a floor-length gown, measure her wearing the shoes she'll wear down the aisle. Add these in the Notes box at checkout, and our designer confirms every number on WhatsApp.

Affordable or Designer? Where the Money Shows
An affordable flower girl dress is fine for a small, casual wedding. But she appears in the most important photos of the day: the walk down the aisle, the family portrait, the first look at the bride. In a luxury wedding, a mass-made dress shows next to a couture bridal gown. That's where a designer flower girl dress earns its place. Our custom flower girl dresses start from $600, and every one is handmade in Miami.
