How much is a christening gown in Ireland?

Shop christening gowns in Ireland usually cost €10 to €140, and handmade Irish gowns about €240 to €260; a couture gown made to measure costs about €515 to €785. Ours start at $599 (about €515), delivered with customs and VAT paid.

What does a baby wear to a christening in Ireland?

Traditionally a long white or ivory christening gown, often with a bonnet and a shawl, worn for the ceremony in the parish church. Many families then change the baby into a lighter dress or romper for the party afterwards.

The long gown is the Irish tradition because it is kept and handed down: brothers, sisters and cousins are christened in the same gown, and one day your baby's own children. That is why the fabric, the lace and the finish matter so much.

For a baby girl: a long gown in satin, silk, organza or lace, with pearls, a lace bonnet or a matching cape. For an older baby who is already sitting or walking, a shorter christening dress is easier to wear.

Her Exact Measurements

What size christening gown does my baby need? Choose the size closest to her age, then send her measurements. Babies grow fast, so we take the measurements 2 to 3 weeks before the christening and the gown fits on the day.

From our own size chart. A long gown is usually made 20 to 35 cm longer than the baby, so it drapes over your arm in the church.

1. Chest: around the fullest part, under the arms.
2. Waist: around the tummy, at the belly button.
3. Shoulder to waist: from the top of the shoulder to the tummy.
4. Shoulder to toe: with the baby lying flat, legs gently straight.
5. Arm: around the upper arm, for sleeves.

When should I order a christening gown?

Order a ready gown at least 3 weeks before the christening, and a custom gown 8 weeks before. Rush service is available.

Christening in 2027? Book the sketch now and we take her measurements a few weeks before the date.

Who buys the christening gown?

In many Irish families the parents choose the gown, and grandparents or godparents often give it as their gift, because it becomes a family heirloom.

Whoever orders, we work with the family on WhatsApp: the style and fabric with whoever is giving the gift, and the measurements with mum.

2. Receive her sketch within one week, and change anything you like.
3. Approve the fabrics and lace before anything is cut.
4. Send her measurements a few weeks before the day.
5. Follow the making through photos and give your final approval.
6. Delivered to Ireland by DHL Express, customs and VAT paid.
