What should a baby girl wear for her first birthday? Something soft enough that she forgets she is wearing it, beautiful enough that you never forget the photos, and made to fit her body, not a size chart. After more than twenty years of dressing first birthdays in our Miami atelier, for families from the USA to Japan, this is everything we tell mothers before they choose.

Chapter I

Start With the Photo, Not the Dress

Most mothers shop backwards. They fall in love with a dress, then try to build a party around it. Instead, picture the one photo you will frame: is it her in the high chair with cake on her nose, toddling across the garden, or held in your arms in front of the balloon wall? That moment decides everything else.

A cake smash photo wants a full, fluffy skirt that fans out when she sits. A garden portrait wants flowers and soft color. A formal family portrait wants a true ball gown. Once you know the photo, the right dress becomes obvious.

Comfort She Won't Fight

A one-year-old cannot tell you a seam is scratching her. She simply cries in every photo. These are the rules we build into every first birthday dress:

What Size Does a 1-Year-Old Wear?

In stores, most one-year-olds wear 12 months or 12–18 months. The problem is that no two babies are shaped alike: one is long and slim, another is round and short, and a store size fits neither perfectly. That is why first birthday dresses so often gape at the chest or swallow her in photos.

Every dress we make is cut to her own measurements instead. You choose the size closest to her age, add these in the Notes box at checkout, and our designer confirms every number with you on WhatsApp before we begin sewing.

Chapter V

The Cake Smash Mistake Almost Everyone Makes

The mistake is the order. Families do the cake smash first, then try to take the beautiful portraits with frosting in her hair, a sticky dress and a baby who is ready for a nap.

Do it the other way around: portraits first, while she is fresh and the dress is perfect, then the cake. Many mothers keep her in the gown for the smash, because the full skirt photographs beautifully from above; others slip her into a simple second outfit.

Either way, blot frosting gently with cool water as soon as the party ends, then have the dress professionally dry cleaned and store it in tissue. That is how a first birthday dress becomes an heirloom.

Chapter VI

The Finishing Touches: Hats, Hair & Shoes

A soft headpiece frames her face in every photo. Most of our first birthday dresses come with a matching handmade hair accessory, and several, like the strawberry set, the zebra dress and the elephant dress, include a party hat. For the cake moment, add a handmade party hat made to her head measurement so it sits gently without an elastic that pinches.

For her feet, soft-soled shoes or bare feet are best for a baby who is just starting to stand. White tights finish a winter look.

Dress the Whole Family

Her first birthday is also your first year as her mother. The portraits families treasure most are the ones where everyone belongs to the same story.

Chapter IX

When Should You Order?

Three to four weeks before the party is ideal. It leaves time to confirm her measurements, approve the design and receive the dress without stress. Ready designs are made and delivered in about 10 days after that, and a rush service is available if her birthday is sooner.

For a fully custom design, allow a little longer for sketches and fabric selection. Message us her date first and we will tell you exactly what is possible.
